Arthur Conan Doyle had shocked the ardent fans of his hero Sherlock Holmes by the demise of the sleuth. There were personal compulsions for the author to free himself from the burden of coming up with newer and newer plots. He never expected the spontaneously unfavorable reaction of the Holmes aficionados, and had to resurrect the hero. The eventual result was The Return of Sherlock Holmes. The artful first exciting episode in 'The Return' shows how brilliantly the detective resumes normalcy as he displays the same, if not a shade better, acumen to unravel intriguing mysteries.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. Before starting his writing career, Doyle attended medical school, where he met the professor who would later inspire his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet was Doyle's first novel; he would go on to write more than sixty stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. He died in England in 1930.
